Floss FAQ
Would you like to know how to use these threads? Click here!
What kind of floss do you use? This floss is 100% cotton floss by DMC. I use white/Blanc for all colors except for The Naturals Collection, Chocolate Vanilla, and Raspberry Cream, when I use Ecru. Though I do not promise that I will not try using other colors. Our "skeins" are between 4 and 5 yards. |
By what process do you dye the floss? Dying floss of any kind compromises its integrity so I take every possible step to keep this floss strong. To do this, I use darker dyes and expose the floss for a very short period of time. These flosses DO NOT soak in the dye. You may notice that the darker colors of store purchased floss can be weaker, this is due to the dye and dyeing. This floss is not cooked or heated in the dye which also helps to preserve its integrity. When I have achieved the color or colors that I am seeking, I rinse the floss in cold water to set the dye and remove loose dye. |
Are these flosses "colorfast"? The answer is Yes, No, and Maybe. I take precautions to remove all the dye from the flosses but REFUSE to scrub or soak them, which could consequentially end up weakening or even destroying the floss. If you like to wash your finished product, then you SHOULD RINSE your floss. Even DMC suggests rinsing your floss and that some loose dye may remain. So, before you use the darker colors, it would be a good idea to rinse (NOT SOAK) the floss in cold water and then allow it to dry completely before using it.
Do you dye in batches? Yes I do. The batches can be as small as 12 skeins, but I do dye in batches. This means that the skein of Butter Mint that you purchased 2 months ago may be different from the one you just ordered. This could be a bad thing if you started your project with one skein of butter mint and then are about to run out. Well, for the same price as any other skein, just send a piece to my address and I will match it to that batch. Colors purchased more recently should not notice much color changes in the skeins of floss.
Where do you dye your floss? The floss is dyed in the basement of my mother's non-smoking home. This is a very clean work environment.
You have 3 children, WHEN do you do all of this? Well, there are not a lot of free moments in a day when you have children. I do not like to give up much time with my children so we have incorporated it into our lives. My husband helps a lot by taking the children out, we go to parks, they watch DVD's or videos with me... and all the while I may be tagging, brainstorming, or working on display elements. Also after the 3 little Burrs are snug in their beds, I am burning the midnight oil.
